OVERVIEW

Set down a private spur off Spring Mountain Road, this property sits above the valley floor with panoramic views from nearly every principal room. Rare through-traffic and a location roughly ten minutes from downtown St. Helena give the estate a privacy uncommon even by Spring Mountain standards.

The residence took its present form during a full down-to-the-studs renovation completed between 2003 and 2005, designed by architect Christiaan Maarse and built by Scott and Warner Builders. A French mansard roofline sets a Tuscan-inspired character from the exterior, carried inside through walnut wall paneling and old-world woodwork by craftsman Miklos Toth.

A formal double-door entry opens into a expansive foyer beneath a handcrafted cedar-inlay ceiling, lit by perimeter windows set in place of a skylight, and a custom ironworks chandelier. The library, paneled in walnut with an old-world finish, holds a media center, a sliding rail ladder and a wood-burning fireplace, along with a pass-through door disguised as a bookshelf that opens directly into the primary suite. The sunken living room pairs two original wood-burning fireplaces with three panels of French glass doors to the rear Ipé deck.

The kitchen is finished with marble slab counters, two-toned cabinetry and a large island beneath a skylight. A Wolf six-burner cooktop, Thermador ventilation and wall oven, double Sub-Zero refrigeration and two dishwashers support daily use and larger gatherings alike, with a separate bar area built for entertaining. The dining room opens to the kitchen and family room in one continuous plan, closing off with privacy doors when a more formal setting is called for.

The primary suite is outfitted with French-door access to the rear deck, a dedicated office nook and a walk-in closet fitted with drawers and shoe storage. Its bath is finished with a steam shower, a deep-soaking cast iron tub and a double vanity in Carrera marble, mirrored to reflect the view, along with the second end of the library's hidden passage, this one concealed behind an integrated mirror.

Outdoors, a new in-ground pool with automatic cover and passive solar heating is paired with an in-ground hot tub and fire pit, and a full-size paved tennis court sits apart on its own portion of the grounds. Established citrus, hydrangea and olive trees, along with oaks, madrona and fir, frame flagstone and gravel pathways, decorative fountains and open lawn.

A 1± acre vineyard is already planted, with room for an additional 2 to 5 acres of hobby planting for an owner who wants to expand it.

The estate runs on a Savant smart home system controlling lighting and audio throughout, a Culligan reverse-osmosis water treatment and softening system, and 600-amp electrical service. A lower level houses the wine cellar, mechanical and AV rooms, and an extra-long one-bay garage currently used as a workout space, along with an additional utility bathroom.

Built with hand craftsmanship carried through every room, 3620 Spring Mountain Road pairs privacy, views, and architecture with room to grow a vineyard, all within ten minutes of town.
